Dostoievski prezintă un personaj aparte, dotat cu calități deosebite, în special bunătatea și sinceritatea. Prințul Miskin, capabil să se sacrifice pentru ceilalți, este perceput de societate ca un idiot. Aceasta a fost motivul pentru care autorul a ales un titlu diferit, renunțând la „Prințul Miskin”. Într-o călătorie cu trenul spre Sankt Petersburg, Miskin se împrietenește cu Rogojin, care îi povestește despre pasiunea sa pentru Nastasia Filipovna, o femeie frumoasă, dar cu o reputație îndoielnică. La onomastica acesteia, Miskin observă cum Rogojin, sub influența alcoolului, îi oferă o sumă mare de bani pentru a o convinge să plece cu el.
