The discussion of findings and implications notably comprises input from an interview with a lead level developer behind Shadow Warrior 2 to provide a complementary professional perspective on OSL and its translation.

This volume employs cognitive linguistics, pragmatics, and corpus linguistics to explore how language structure and contextual use shape meaning-making. Ten contributors analyze a variety of linguistic evidence from English, Greek, German, Hungarian, Latin, Polish, Russian, and Ukrainian, examining academic discourse, literature, church language, and media language. Each paper utilizes different analytic constructs and methodologies but collectively aims to systematically describe and explain patterns of language-driven meaning construction and communication, both within a single language and from a contrastive perspective. Key topics include the internationalization of academic discourse in European universities, the use of corpus tools for analyzing textual meaning across literary genres, and the semantic shifts in expressions of distance. The volume also addresses holistic cognition, metaphors, and the localization of English movie titles for Polish audiences. This interdisciplinary approach sheds light on the complexities of language and cognition across diverse contexts.
The book’s principal argument is that the concepts of Cognitive Linguistics offer considerable explanatory potential which can be systematically used in accounts of translation, and especially of subtitling as its more specifically constrained audiovisual mode. Authentic English-to-Polish subtitling data are explored to uncover patterns of construal reconfiguration which can be categorised with the use of cognitive semantic constructs. The author also examines other hypotheses: spatio-temporal constraints, for example, do not always directly account for the reductionist alterations of the source text in subtitling. Also, target construals need not display lower granularity levels than original construals and granularity can de facto be boosted via subtitling. And last, but not least, the conventionalisation of language structures used in subtitles can be higher than that of the original expressions.
