Kniha rozebírá jak vztah společnosti vůči náboženství a materialismu, tak i filosofická, sociologická a kulturní témata. Text je rozdělen na dvě hlavní kapitoly: I. Úvahy o náboženství, II. Islám - bipolární jednota a dodatek Odevzdanost Bohu pojednávající o bohabojnosti (arab. taqwa). Izetbegovič se snaží reflektovat tři rozdílná východiska: náboženství, materialismus a islám. V jeho tezi představuje křesťanství náboženské východisko, materialismus přírodu a islámský pohled je zaměřen na člověka žijícího ve světě obojího. Izetbegovič poukazuje na vývoj dějin a domnívá se, že je nemožné být naprosto křesťanský nebo zcela materialistický. Islám pro něho symbolizuje "třetí cestu", a názvem své knihy mu dokonce přisuzuje významnou roli zprostředkovatele informací mezi dávnými civilizacemi a moderním Západem, a vyslovuje tak i své přání, že by tuto roli měl islám sehrát znovu i v současném rozděleném světě.
