Michael Landy (* 1963) gehört zu den »Young British Artists«, die ab 1988 Furore gemacht haben. Er trat mit Installationen auf, bei denen Fiktion und reales Leben eine beunruhigende Liaison eingingen. Landys Kunst ist geprägt von einer intensiven Auseinandersetzung mit der Gesellschaft, mit der Haltung zu Konsum, zur Warenwelt, zur Vergänglichkeit der Dinge und zum Umgang mit Besitzen und Loslassen. Mit seinen Arbeiten stellen sich (unausgesprochen) essenzielle Fragen: Was macht materieller Besitz mit uns? Was brauchen wir zum Leben? Oder auch: Wie schöpferisch ist Zerstörung? Immer wieder gelingt es dem Künstler, eingängige und überraschende künstlerische Formulierungen zu diesen Themen zu finden. Mit Break Down wurde er 2001 einem größeren Publikum bekannt: Er inventarisierte in einem Ladenlokal in London sämtliche Gegenstände, die ihm zu diesem Zeitpunkt gehörten, um sie anschließend in einem geregelten Prozess zu zerstören.
