This illustrated two-volume set is a further detailed look at the helmets of all nations using an identifiable helmet during the First World War, and contains over 1,000 full colour, detailed photos and over 200 period bw photos. Featured are rare and unique helmets, some previously unseen. The text includes a short history of the belligerent countries setting the helmets and their development in context as well as details and dimensions of all helmets.
This two volume set (companion volumes to the author's previous books on World War II German helmets) is packed with nearly 1000 full-colour photographs of over 180 helmets and covers, all shown at full page size and many in detail. The helmets shown are some of the most wonderful and exotic camouflage helmets to be seen in private and public collections. The various sections are divided into: Paint, Texture, Wire, Covers, Netting, Straps, Interiors and Miscellaneous with each section having its own period photograph reference section -- most never before published. The author brings to the reader and collector, for the first time, a clear, detailed look at the many and varied styles of camouflage the World War II German soldier applied to what was his most personal piece of equipment.
Die außergewöhnliche Publikation beruht auf zwei Fotoalben aus dem Balkanfeldzug 1941 der SS-Kriegsberichter- Kompanie unter dem Kommando von Gunter d’Alquen, die erst im Jahre 2004 ans Licht der Öffentlichkeit kamen. Ursprünglich gehörten beide Bände ins Archiv der Leibstandarte in Berlin-Lichterfelde. Die hier gezeigten Fotos sind von herausragender Qualität und geben intime Einblicke in das stürmische Geschehen. Der Betrachter sieht Soldaten auf dem Eisenbahntransport, bei der Flußüberquerung, im Biwak, in der Feuerstellung, im Kampf und bei Paraden und Ordensverleihungen. Die Fotos zeigen verstaubte Kradmelder auf ihren Maschinen, Pioniere beim Brückenbau, Kanoniere an der 3,7-cm-Pak, Sturmgeschütze im Gelände und auf der Straße, Soldaten bei der Einschiffung auf Fischkuttern und bei der Besichtigung der Akropolis in Athen. Man erkennt zahlreiche hochausgezeichnete SS- Führer, unter anderem den Kommandeur Sepp Dietrich, „Panzermeyer“ Kurt Meyer, Fritz Witt, Richard Schulze-Kossens. Jedes der präsentierten Fotos ist mit einer ausführlichen Bildunterschrift versehen, das die Szenerie erläutert. In einer kurzen Einführung werden der Verlauf des Balkanfeldzuges und der Anteil der „Leibstandarte“ an dem Unternehmen gewürdigt.
