he Settle & Carlisle railway runs across the roof of England, reaching the highest point on any main line railway in the country, and carries both passenger services and freight traffic. But it has also been fortunate enough to survive two attempts to close it and in fact should probably never have been built at all. There could now be a 72-mile abandoned trackbed passing through such places as Blea Moor, over Dent Head and Arten Gill viaducts and the legendary Ais Gill summit, but sufficient people felt strongly enough to campaign successfully to stop this happening. This is the story of the revival in the fortunes of the Settle & Carlisle. Many closed stations have reopened and been restored to their former glory, freight traffic has returned and steam-hauled excursions over the line have gone from strength to strength

Steam trains and Scottish highland scenery make a powerful combination, but is an experience that virtually disappeared fifty years ago. From the early 1980s though, as the railway preservation movement went from strength to strength, the return of steam traction to the Highlands proved to be one of the movement's most elusive goals. After the first tentative steps with the occasional steam train over the Highland main line though, steam returned with a vengeance in 1984, to the West Highland line to Mallaig on almost a daily basis. Packed with evocative colour images, this book shows the full story of the steam revival on every surviving route in the Highlands, from the Strathspey Railway, through the regular 'West Highlander' and 'Jacobite' trains to Mallaig, to the one-off specials to Oban, Kyle of Lochalsh and the Far North, and including the multi-day, multiengine land cruises of recent years. With the accent on sunshine, scenery and steam, this is a comprehensive tribute to the men and machines which have conquered the Highlands for a second time in steam's Highland revival.

Osprey's examination of Germany's home front situation during World War II (1939-1945). At the outbreak of war in 1939 Germany was committed to the concept of Blitzkrieg - a swift and decisive war. Yet, the reality became something very different as every corner of German society was hit by the realities of war. This book details the critical civilian support that was necessary to maintain Nazi control of the civilian population and includes first-hand accounts of the experiences of civilians who suffered at the hands of their own government as well as enduring the deprivations and fears of wartime life. With analysis and descriptions of civil and home services, from air raid wardens to postwomen, this book provides a detailed, lavishly illustrated description of wartime life in Germany, exploring the tentacles of the Nazi state as they affected every man, woman and child.
