      Píše se rok 1914 a mladí muži odcházejí do války. Británii musejí udržet v chodu ženy. Peggy pracuje jako knihařka v nakladatelství Clarendon v Oxfordu, žije na obytném člunu se svou sestrou-dvojčetem Maud a touží po vzdělání. Potajmu čte knihy, které váže, a zmetky si odnáší domů, čímž rozšiřuje sbírku, kterou započala už jejich matka, také knihvazačka. Peggy touží po studiu na Oxfordské univerzitě, ale celý život musí poslouchat, že ona má knihy vázat, a ne číst. Navíc se musí postarat o Maud, která je výjimečná, jiná, a také zranitelná. Dopisy od přátel na frontě a setkání s belgickými válečnými uprchlíky a raněnými Peggy jednak seznámí s realitou brutální války, jednak otevřou možnost změny v životě, který se zdál být předem nalinkovaný. Jenže láska je velký závazek.Knihařka z Oxfordu vtáhne čtenáře nejen do atmosféry válečné Anglie, ale také do doby, kdy ženy musely bojovat o každý krůček k rovnoprávnosti. Je to román o vědění, o tom, kdo jej utváří, kdo k němu má přístup, a o tom, o co společnost přichází, když je někomu upíráno.
