Kenji Nakagami

    August 2, 1946 – August 12, 1992

Kenji Nakagami is renowned as the first post-war Japanese writer to publicly identify as Burakumin, a member of one of Japan's long-outcast groups. His works intensely explore the life experiences of individuals striving to survive within a Burakumin community in western Japan. Nakagami was an active and controversial figure in the Japanese literary scene, with his writings sparking considerable debate. He was recognized as the first writer from the ghetto to reach the mainstream, aiming to convey the harsh realities of life at the rougher edge of Japan's economic miracle to a wider audience.
