Acknowledgements This dissertation was completed based on the research work at the Chair of Design in Mechanical Engineering (KIMA), University of Kaiserslautern, Germany. I had a lot of supports and advices for the completion of this work.

Focusing on George Eliot's novels, the book examines the intricate connections between communal memory and historical perception. It delves into themes of memory, narrative, and the interplay of personal and national recollections. Hao Li presents a novel critical perspective, drawing on significant nineteenth-century theories, and advocates for a reevaluation of Eliot's nuanced grasp of memory and history, which both incorporates and surpasses the positivist and romantic-historical frameworks of her era.
