The Hundred Thousand Books of Bellatin projects consists of 100 books written by Bellatin, each of which is to be printed in an edition of 1,000.

The latest work in English by renowned Peruvian-Mexican cult writer Mario Bellatin, a short, allegorical novel that questions truth, art, language, and the split between East and West.

Conceived of as a set of fragmentary manuscripts from an unpublished Joseph Roth novel, Jacob the Mutant is a novella in a perpetual state of transformation -- a story about a man named Jacob, an ersatz rabbi and owner of a roadside tavern. But when reality shifts, so does Jacob, mutating into another person entirely.

This anthology features 30 dust jackets of non-existing books, presenting a unique literary journey through diverse topics. Explore themes such as unpublished memories, tropical manifestations, intragenealogy, the omnipresence of the letter E, the taste of truth, the aroma of existence, contemporary ruins, and whimsical conversations between a cardinal and a roadrunner. The project is spearheaded by Mariana Castillo Deball and includes contributions from notable artists and writers like Mario Bellatin, Koen Brams, Abraham Cruzvillegas, and many others. This compilation is published in conjunction with the exhibition at Grimmuseum in Berlin and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Roskilde, curated by Solvej Helweg Ovesen. The collection invites readers to delve into a world of imagination and creativity, showcasing a variety of perspectives and artistic expressions.

La presente versión actualizada de Salón de belleza -realizada más de veinte años después de su primera publicación- da cuenta de un delicado ejercicio de equilibrista, donde la meta puede ser entendida como escribir nuevamente para que la escritura original se mantenga intacta. Para mí como creador, la experiencia llevada bajo la atenta vigilancia de la señora Guillermina Olmedo y Vera fue similar a la de devolver su esplendor a un antiguo jardín. Un minucioso trabajo de desbrozo, exhaustivo hasta casi llegar a lo invisible, donde la nueva lectura logra que ese jardín adquiera un tono de verde realmente intenso, un placer acompañado del olor penetrante del césped acabado de cortar.

Mario Bellatin erzählt in seinem Buch »Der Blinde Dichter« vom Leben eines Sektengründers, des Blinden Dichters, der schon in jungen Jahren zum Mythos, zu einer prophetischen Lichtgestalt, zum Guru aufsteigt. Als Säugling angeblich auf wundersame Weise von Fischern aus einem Körbchen auf offener See gerettet, er erweckt er schon als Kind Aufmerksamkeit. Denn er ist blind und weiß Rat für die Bewohner seines Dorfes. Nach einer langen Wanderschaft kommt er in eine Stadt, wo er nach dem Vorbild der Pfadfinder, deren ebenso straffe wie simple Organisationsform er übernimmt, eine »Bruderschaft« gründet. Glaubensgrundlagen und Ordensregeln der Gemeinschaft hat er während seiner Wanderschaft in seinem KLEINEN HEFT DER SCHWER ZU ERKLÄRENDEN DINGE aufgezeichnet. Obwohl diese meist in Gedichtform gehaltenen Gedanken und Maximen an Aberwitz und Absurdität wohl nicht zu überbieten sind, wird das Heft zur »Heiligen Schrift« der Glückseligkeit verheißenden Sekte, die so zwar von Jahr zu Jahr mehr Zulauf von fanatischen Anhängern erhält und durch manipulierende Erziehungsmethoden an Macht gewinnt, vor den Augen der Leser aber fortschreitend demaskiert wird.
