Monier Monier-Williams

    November 12, 1819 – April 11, 1899

    Monier Monier-Williams was a pivotal figure in the study and teaching of Asian languages in England, particularly Sanskrit. His life's work, a comprehensive Sanskrit-English dictionary, remains a valuable resource for linguists and students today. Beyond academic pursuits, he actively advocated for the conversion of India to Christianity as a goal of Orientalist scholarship. He also founded the Indian Institute at Oxford University, which served as a center for Indian studies and training for the Indian Civil Service.
