Lalla Romano erzählt die Geschichte einer kleinen Familie im Piemont in den 1930er und 1940er Jahren. Sie erzählt von der Beziehung zwischen zwei Frauen, die sich in Herkunft, Kultur und Lebensweise sehr voneinander unterscheiden: Maria, eine Bäuerin, und eine Lehrerin, Schriftstellerin und Malerin, in deren Haus Maria als Bedienstete arbeitet. In ihrer nüchternen, genauen, mitunter fast spröden Sprache zeichnet Lalla Romano ein Porträt von Maria. Und dabei entwirft sie das Porträt des Dorfes von Maria mit seinen Menschen, seiner Landschaft und seiner Zeit, in die der Zweite Weltkrieg fällt. Die Bindung zwischen beiden Frauen, ihre Seelenverwandtschaft, tritt zutage, als das Kind der Erzählerin geboren wird. Mit dem Heranwachsen des Kindes wird sie immer offenkundiger. Und so erzählt Lalla Romano in ihrem Roman »Maria«, den sie als »eine wahre Geschichte« bezeichnet, im Grunde von diesem Kind, von Kindern und ihren Müttern. »Maria«, der erste von Lalla Romanos zahlreichen Romanen, erschien 1953 im Turiner Verlag Einaudi und wurde 1954 mit dem Premio Internazionale Veillon ausgezeichnet.
