Freiheit, Natur und Religion sind die drei Eckpunkte des Spannungsfeldes, in dem christliche bzw. katholische Sozialethik traditionell und gegenwärtig entwickelt wird. Für Arno Anzenbacher, dem dieser Band zum 70. Geburtstag gewidmet ist, waren diese Eckpunkte zugleich Programm: Ausgehend von einem klassisch-liberalen Verständnis personaler Autonomie und Verantwortlichkeit hat er das liberale Paradigma einerseits um einen Rekurs auf anthropologische Annahmen und andererseits um einen Bezug zu christlich-religiösen Grundgewissheiten ergänzt – aber sicher nicht verlassen.
