Beyond Reception applies a new concept for analyzing cultural change, known as ‘transformation', the study of Renaissance humanism. Traditional scholarship takes the Renaissance humanists at their word, that they were simply viewing the ancient world as it actually was and recreating its key features within their own culture. Initially modern studies in the classical tradition accepted this claim and saw this process as largely passive. 'Transformation theory' emphasizes the active role played by the receiving culture both in constructing a vision of the past and in transforming that vision into something that was a meaningful part of the later culture. A chapter than explains the terminology and workings of 'transformation theory' is followed by essays by nine established experts that suggest how the key disciplines of grammar, rhetoric, history, poetry, and philosophy in the Renaissance represent transformations of what went on in these fields in ancient Greece and Rome. The picture that emerges suggests that Renaissance humanism as it was actually practiced both received and transformed the classical past, at the same time as it constructed a vision of that past that still resonates today.

Unlocking self-expression through NLP, part of the Professional Perspectives series , offers you over a hundred activities that create the need and the desire in the students to express themselves, be it in speech or in writing. Neuro-Linguistic Programming is the study of human experience, focusing on mind-body connection, on language as a mirror of the inner being and on the fact that much of our experience is mediated by powerful internal programmes we are not normally aware of. Talking about newly-felt, newly-apprehended sensations and ideas through English gradually changes the learner’s relationship to the language: A real desire to talk and write An improved realtionship with the target language A growing sense of ownership of the target language A growth in psychological awareness A more accurate awareness of classmates and a growth of respect for them The activities are divided up into sections that go from Warmers to Exam Preparation, from Vocabulary work to Integrated Skills practice, through strategies such as Introspection, Questionnaires, Roleplay and Storytelling.

"For the past three years, Stacey Baker has been photographing women's legs in New York City and posting the pictures on Instagram, where she has over 75,000 followers. The women are strangers she meets on the street who agree to pose in front of a nearby wall. Only their legs are visible in the frame. She always frames them so the subject is cut off at the waist. She rigorously stages these photographs, asking the muse to stand in front of a gritty, textured wall, and composing each image so the heels line up with the horizon line where the wall meets the chewing-gum-pocked sidewalk, and always framing it so the thin strip of pavement takes up about a sixth of the picture. By following this disciplined approach, Baker has figured out a way to commandeer a portrait studio out of the chaos of midtown Manhattan. The images, viewed collectively, reflect the diversity of the female figure and also reflect the personality of each subject as well as the fashion of the moment: leggings, miniskirts, jeans, etc. Many of the pictures were taken on West 40th Street between 7th and 8th Avenues, near where Baker works as a photo editor at The New York Times Magazine, often during her lunch hour (Kathy Ryan)."--Publisher's description

This book presents the work of London-based artist Merlin Carpenter. With essays by critic Caroline Busta and art historian George Baker, the book represents the final part of a series of exhibitions entitled, The Opening. These exhibitions were marked by the fact that all the paintings presented were produced at the galleries during the exhibition openings. Hundreds of photos of these opening events offer a fascinating view of the art world from 2007 to 2009. The paintings by the artist are also reproduced, as are numerous gallery invitations announcing Carpenter's referential, at times irreverent, politically-charged painting actions.
