Time and again in recent decades, art world denizens have celebrated or mourned the demise and subsequent resurgence of painting. In the Power of Painting invites you to take a look at painting above and beyond the rather tiresome modernist myth of the end of painting. It proposes to consider the challenges and problems facing painters in the age of photography not as an omen of painting's eventual final exhaustion, but rather as a source of its lasting vitality. In the Power of Painting traces how six seminal postwar artists-Andy Warhol, Sigmar Polke, Gerhard Richter, Cy Twombly, Brice Marden, and Ross Bleckner-developed their signature approach to painting in response to the art form's perceived crisis. The six groups of works from the Daros collection impressively demonstrate how these painters re-wrote the rules of painting, from their initial experimenting to the canvases that heralded their maturity. A handsome and splendidly reproduced book, indispensable for all those looking for ways out of the restrictions and limitations of modernist and postmodernist approaches to art.

My way into and out of the crisis

I never believed that I could have health problems. I didn't waste a single thought on it because I didn't have time to be sick. I always had to function, I always had to be there for others. I didn't feel the warning signs, I even ignored them until it was too late. When my doctor finally gave me the diagnosis - I have a burnout - and told me I absolutely had to get treatment, it was too late. I tell my journey into illness and back to a normal life in an exciting biography!

    • About trees

      • 183 pages
      • 7 hours of reading

Peter Fischer and his team have curated around 100 works for an exhibition and accompanying volume that explore the multifaceted symbolism of trees in art. From Berlinde De Bruyckere's massive, rag-wrapped stumps to Peter Doig's oil painting of a sparse forest with a Corbusier building, each piece presents the tree as a complex motif. These artworks invite contemplation on existence, revealing trees as symbols, mirrors, and projections of life and death. Unlike natural sciences and religion, art poses questions rather than providing answers, allowing for deeper exploration of humanity's relationship with nature. Robert Macfarlane notes that viewing the world from a tree can evoke a sense of liberation and safety, blending the identities of tree and man. As Fischer highlights, trees symbolize imaginary and actual worlds, often speaking in fairy tales and shaping their environments. They serve as landmarks, bearing witness to history and hosting celebrations. This exhibition features artists such as Carlos Amorales, Louise Bourgeois, Anselm Kiefer, and many others, showcasing how trees can inspire clashes and connections between nature and culture. The exhibition took place at Zentrum Paul Klee Bern from October 17, 2015, to January 24, 2016.
