Erben compiled and wrote A Bouquet based on his studies of Slavic folktales and folk songs. First published in 1853, it is dotted with murder and mayhem : graves opening and the dead walking the earth, the animate becoming the inanimate and vice versa, ogres and monsters of lake and wood, human transformations reminiscent of Ovid's Metamorphoses. Written as ballads, Marcela Sulak's new translation perfectly captures the cadence and rhythm in an English that is fresh and energetic. Through the years A Bouquet has come to be regarded as a masterpiece and wellspring of inspiration to artists of all stripes, including Antonín Dvořák, who composed a series of symphonic poems to some of these tales. Of the many illustrators who have contributed to the various editions that have appeared over the past century and a half, Alén Diviš's artwork is generally considered the most powerful. Na začátku románu pan Dashwood umírá a paní Dashwoodová se i s dcerami musí odstěhovat z rodinného sídla, které připadlo nejstaršímu synovi. S omezenými prostředky se paní Dashwoodová a její dcery usadí v malém venkovském domku, kde Marianne a Elinor prožívají své první lásky i zklamání. Marianne se řídí především svými city a své starší sestře Elinor, která má racionálnější pohled na svět, vyčítá chlad a rezervovanost. Ale nakonec zjistí, že rozum a cit se nemusí nutně vylučovat…

John Carter follows them in the hope to liberate his beloved wife. His antagonists flee to the north, taking the three women along. Thereafter John Carter follows them untiring into the north polar regions where he discovers more fantastic creatures and ancient, mysterious Martian races. These he overcomes in battle, and is later proclaimed "Warlord of Barsoom" by his allies. This book is the last to feature Tars Tarkas, John Carter's ally, in any major role; indeed, the green Barsoomians of whom Tars Tarkas is an oligarch disappear altogether from most of the later novels.
