Die als Gemeinschaftsentwicklung des BZA München und der deutschen Lokomotiv-, Getriebe- und Motorenindustrie entwickelte Baureihe V 80 leitete in Deutschland eine neue Epoche des Lokomotivbaus ein. Moderne Schweißtechnik bei Rahmen, Aufbauten und Drehgestellen setzten ebenso wie die Anordnung der Maschinenanlage mit hydraulischer Kraftübertragung und Gelenkwellenantrieb neue Maßstäbe. Doch gebaut und in Dienst gestellt wurden lediglich zehn Exemplare, weil es sich bald herausstellte, dass die geforderte Verwendbarkeit für den leichten Strecken- und schweren Rangierdienst mit nur einer einzigen Baureihe wirtschaftlich nicht vertretbar war. Das Buch beschreibt die Geschichte dieser bemerkenswerten Lokomotiven und ähnlicher Parallelentwicklungen bis zur Ausmusterung der 280 002 als letzte ihrer Gattung beim Bw Bamberg. Ausführlich eingegangen wird auch auf das „zweite Leben“ der V 80 bei der Hersfelder Kreisbahn, in Italien und als DB-Museumslokomotive.
