Colin Garratt was a railway photographer known for his published photographic albums. In these collections, he curated and provided captions for the work of other photographers. He often listed himself as the primary author, placing his name on the spine, which sometimes overshadowed the original artists.

Previously published as The world encyclopedia of locomotives and Great railway journeys of the world.
This is Colin Garratt's third book in the "Last Steam Locomotives of the World" series. It provides a superb visual survey in full color of the steam locomotive in Southern Africa. Garratt personally explored the lines he writes about, from the busy industrial lines of the gold mines of to the historic East Africa Railway, from a quiet spell in the Karroo Desert to the railways of Nairobi. Covers what were then South African Railways, Rhodesia Railways, and the East African Railway in Kenya and Tanzania. About half the book is photos and the other half is an excellent description of the steam railways -- their atmosphere and the character of the countries -- that is based on a serious technical authority on locomotives and an affection for the locale. Invaluable to both the railfan and historian of any of these countries.
