      The New Psychology of Leadership

      • 352 pages
      • 13 hours of reading

This ground-breaking book provides a refreshing introduction to the field of leadership and is jam-packed with theoretical and practical insights derived from a wealth of applied scientific research conducted by the authors and their colleagues around the world over the last three decades. It starts from the premise that leadership is never just about leaders. Instead it is about leaders and followers who are joined together as members of a social group that provides them with a sense of shared social identity -- a sense of 'us-ness'. In these terms, leadership is understood as the process through which leaders work with followers to create, represent, advance, and embed this sense of shared social identity. The new edition of this award-winning book presents a wealth of evidence from historical, organizational, political and sporting contexts to provide an expanded exploration of these processes of identity leadership in action. In particular, it builds upon the success of the first edition by examining the operation of identity leadership in contemporary society and fleshing out practical answers to key organizational and institutional challenges. Drawing on real-world examples and rich data sources, this book will appeal to academics, researchers and students of psychology, business and management, as well as to practitioners, policy makers and anyone interested in the workings of leadership, influence and power.

Originally published in 1976, this volume reports research that will help us to understand the causes of psychogenic diseases. It deals both experimentally and theoretically with the question of symptom specificity in psychosomatic research - why some individuals respond to psychological stress with gastric disorders, others with sexual impotence, and still others with high blood pressure. As the author notes in summarizing his conclusions, "The repeated pairing of activation of a given organic system with intense nervous stress directs the pathological influence of the stressor primarily upon the system activated; subsequently the natural stimuli which would ordinarily activate the system in a normal manner sustain the pathological stressor's effect as a conditioned stimulus for the stressor effect." The translation of this work from the original Russian brings to the attention of Western investigators new and useful models of stress-induced disorders, and sheds new light on the pervasive problem of psychosomatic disease.

Planning and the Growth of the Firm

      • 218 pages
      • 8 hours of reading

Originally published in 1978. The type of firm focused upon in this study is the large manager-controlled business organisation, although the analysis is not restricted to this kind of entity, as firms of all shapes and sizes are finding it increasingly necessary to plan, particularly in environments characterised by rapid innovation and technological change. After an initial survey of various growth theories, the book analyses the vehicles of growth as well as the constraints, so that the process of growth is seen in the context of corporate planning and also within the context of planning in the economy as a whole. Some of the more important contributions to the economic theory of business behaviour are brought together and the implications of these works for micro-economic theory and managerial economics are determined. Particular emphasis is placed upon Marris’s growth model, and the theme of balanced growth – through the analysis of the diversification and financial aspects of planning – is developed. The planning process is also discussed within the public sector and selected case studies of local authority defence and health planning are examined.

Increasing urbanization and increasing urban density put enormous pressure on the relationships between people and place in cities. Built environment professionals must pay attention to the impact of people-place relationships in small- to large-scale urban initiatives. A small playground in a neighborhood pocket park is an example of a small-scale urban development; a national environmental policy that influences energy sources is an example of a large-scale initiative. All scales of decision-making have implications for the people-place relationships present in cities. This book presents new research in contemporary, interdisciplinary urban challenges, and opportunities, and aims to keep the people-place relationship debate in focus in the policies and practices of built environment professionals and city managers. Most urban planning and design decisions, even those on a small scale, will remain in the urban built form for many decades, conditioning people's experience of their city. It is important that these decisions are made using the best available knowledge. This book contains an interdisciplinary discussion of contemporary urban movements and issues influencing the relationship between people and place in urban environments around the world which have major implications for both the processes and products of urban planning, design, and management. The main purpose of the book is to consolidate contemporary thinking among experts from a range of disciplines including anthropology, environmental psychology, cultural geography, urban design and planning, architecture and landscape architecture, and the arts, on how to conceptualize and promote healthy people and place relationships in the 21st-century city

First published in 1984. Coming as it did after the abolition of slavery in the British Empire in 1834, in many respects indentured labour can be regarded as a replacement of the slave labour system. This book is comprehensive and far-reaching in its scope and the complex issues which it raises.
