Confrontation, Competition and the Co-evolution of Modernism in Berlin
In urban planning, the history of a community is usually reflected in a juxtaposition of different quarters shaped by the spirit of their respective epochs. The fact that there are ensembles from one and the same time in a city, which are to be understood as construction and counter-construction, is a trademark of Berlin, the formerly divided German capital. In particular, there are two listed ensembles for this »double Berlin«: the Karl-Marx-Allee in the eastern part of the city built in the 1950s and the Hansaviertel in the west, which was built in 1957 for the International Building Exhibition.
Das Buch behandelt die herausragenden Bauten des 20. Jahrhunderts – von Gaudi, dem Bauhaus bis zu Le Corbusier –, die bereits zum Weltkulturerbe gehören oder für die der Antrag dafür gestellt wurde. Dabei werden vor allem Fragen der Bewertung und Nominierung von Welterbestätten des 20. Jahrhunderts im internationalen Vergleich sowie Probleme der Erhaltung und Nutzung der Denkmalsubstanz erörtert. Das Buch ist das Ergebnis der von ICOMOS Deutschland in Verbindung mit dem Landesdenkmalamt Berlin und dem Internationalen Wissenschaftlichen ICOMOS-Komitee für das Erbe des 20. Jahrhunderts initiierten Konferenz „World Heritage Sites of the 20th Century. Gaps and Risks from a European Point of View“.
