A Collection of Apocryphal Christian Literature in an English Translation
782 pages
28 hours of reading
This collection of apocryphal texts supersedes the best-selling edition by M. R. James, which was originally published in 1924, and regularly reprinted. Several new texts have come to light since 1924 and the textual base for some of the apocrypha previously translated by James is now more secure, as in several cases there are recently published critical editions available. Although a modest appendix to James's edition was added in 1953, no thorough revision has previously been undertaken. In this volume, J. K. Elliott presents new translations of the texts and has provided each of them with a short introduction and bibliography directed to those who wish to pursue further the issues raised in the texts, or to consult the critical editions, other versions, or general studies. The translations are in modern English, in contrast to James's deliberate imitation of the language of the Authorized Version. The collection is designed to give readers the most important and famous of the Christian apocrypha, together with a select sample of gnostic texts. Full translations of the earliest texts are printed.
M. R. James, an influential figure in the ghost story genre, began his writing career later in life, debuting with "Ghost Stories of an Antiquary" at age 42. Recognized for redefining the ghost story for the 20th century, he is credited as the founder of the 'antiquarian ghost story.' This edition features his classic works, accompanied by a new introductory biography that offers insights into his life and literary contributions, making it accessible for modern readers.
Exploring the intersection of the supernatural and the mundane, the narrative delves into the lives of characters who encounter mysterious forces that challenge their understanding of reality. Themes of belief, fear, and the unknown are woven throughout, as the protagonists grapple with their perceptions and the implications of the spirits that may linger around them. The story invites readers to reflect on the unseen influences that shape our experiences and the deeper connections between the physical and spiritual worlds.
M.R. James' celebrated ghost stories resonate still. A towering presence in
literature, TV and film, his work is much admired today. This new collection
brings together many of his most famous tales including: Oh, Whistle, and I'll
Come to You, My Lad; Canon Alberic's Scrap-Book; The Mezzotint; The Fenstanton
Witch; The Experiment; Wailing Well.
A level 4 Oxford Bookworms Library graded reader. Retold for Learners of English by Peter Hawkins. If you find a locked room in a lonely inn, don't try to open it, even on a bright sunny day. If you find a strange whistle hidden among the stones of an old church, don't blow it. If a mysterious man gives you a piece of paper with strange writing on it, give it back to him at once. And if you call a dead man from his grave, don't expect to sleep peacefully ever again. Read these five ghost stories by daylight, and make sure your door is locked.
