"The Spanish Civil War between the Nationalists, under Gen. Francisco Franco, and the Republicans polarised international opinion. The Nationalists received aid from the fascists -- Nazi Germany and Italy; the Republicans from Russia and the International Brigades. German assistance started in July 1936, when Hitler sent Ju52 transports to Morocco from where they transported the Army of Africa to Spain. In October 1936, Hitler gave permission for the Condor Legion to be formed. An autonomous unit responsible only to Franco, the legion participated in all the major engagements of the war -- including Brunete, Teruel, Aragon and Ebro -- but possibly its best remembered participation was the carpet-bombing of the market town of Guernica, immortalised by Picaso. The Condor Legion returned to Germany in 1938"--Page 4 of cover.

    • The Brandenburgers were made up initially from Abwehr volunteers, as a commando force to seize vital objectives such as bridges and tunnels, until the arrival of leading units of the German main force. This book covers organization and actions, including a pre-war action in Poland in August 1939, their assault on the Low Countries in 1940, on the Eastern Front, operations in Iraq and Iran, Afghanistan and India and use in North Africa. The 'Spearhead' series is designed to look at the cutting edge of war, dealing with units capable of operating completely independently in the forefront of battle. Each volume in the series examines the chosen unit's origins and history, its orgainzation and order of battle, it's battle history theater by theater, its insignia and its markings. Also covered are biographies of the most important commanders of each unit. Each title ends with an assessment of unit effectiveness-as seen by the unit itself, by its opponents and the light of more recent historical research.

    • While several straightforward narratives have been written about World War I, few have attempted a month-by-month approach to both the major events and lesser episodes of the Great War. In this illustrated chronology, each year of World War I from 1914 to 1918 is prefaced with a brief introduction followed by a one- to eight-page spread for every month. April 1917, for example, includes coverage of major events like the declaration war by the United States, the German retreat to the Hindenburg Line, the Anglo-Canadian victory at Arras, the beginning of France's disastrous Nivelle offensive, and German victory at the second Battle of Gaza. Narratives of each event are written in a lively style illustrated with maps and frontline photography. Every monthly section also includes a sidebar highlighting comparatively minor events.
