      On Civilizing Capitalism

      • 268 pages
      • 10 hours of reading

Modern political, economic, and moral theories are critiqued for being rooted in outdated 17th-century intuitive reasoning rather than contemporary scientific insights. Brian Ellis reevaluates the founding of the United Nations and post-war policies, arguing that they reflected a philosophy aligned with scientific realism. He challenges established thinkers like Rawls and Nozick, advocating for a philosophy focused on societal functionality and evidence-based economics, which recognizes historical differences among societies and their unique development paths.

      The New Enlightenment

      • 308 pages
      • 11 hours of reading

The Case for Scientific Realism in Morals, Economics and Politics. Steven Pinker's book Enlightenment Now establishes that great progress has been made on the aims of the European Enlightenment. However, the minds of many economists, moralists and political thinkers in the West are still set firmly in the eighteenth century. Progress has been due mainly to the physical scientific revolutions of the 19th and 20th centuries, and the industrial revolutions they generated. A new enlightenment is needed to overcome this poverty of social theory, and bring our economists and political theorists up to date in the socially connected, commercially integrated and existentially threatened world of the 21st century.

      Rationalism

      • 306 pages
      • 11 hours of reading

"This book is a critique of rationalism. It aims to explain both its powerful contributions to mathematics and physical sciences, where our arithmetical, geometrical, and mechanical intuitions have had a highly productive role in the development of pure theory, and its disastrous failures in cosmology and the moral sciences. In these supposed sciences, rationalism has all but destroyed the social conscience of the West, by creating the disastrous political philosophy of neoliberalism. To reset our moral compasses, we must develop new, and socially just versions, of the old welfare states. And, to restore democracy, we must return to Keynesian economic management" -- back cover.

Brian Clough’s time as Manager of Derby County is the most successful period in the history of the club. But it all ended acrimoniously when he resigned in 1973. Told through the official board meeting minutes, this is the inside story. Whilst all was fine on the field with the club's first league title and European competition, the relationship between the Manager and Directors deteriorated during the latter years to a point where they went their separate ways amidst a very public row. For the first time, with exclusive, authorised access to the Board Meeting Minutes, we are able to reproduce many of these from the start of the 1970-71 season through to the early part of the 1973-74 season. We learn about the European ban in 1970, the controversial signings of players and the numerous complaints made to the footballing authorities about the conduct and comments made by the Manager about other clubs. Additional comments from the author provide background details to the events discussed in the Board Meetings and, together with several autobiographies forms an important addition to the history of the club.
