Lev Kuleshov

Lev Kuleshov stands as one of the earliest film theorists and a pivotal figure in Soviet montage theory. He believed the essence of cinema lay in editing, the juxtaposition of one shot with another, a concept he demonstrated through the renowned Kuleshov Effect. This editing exercise revealed how intercutting an actor's performance with different images profoundly alters audience interpretation. Beyond his theoretical contributions, Kuleshov was also an active director of feature films.
