These poems reimagine identity on the scale of one life or of human history: from “the emanation of a dead star still alive” to the “pinhole iris of your mortal eye.” What is a particular person? How unique? What is anyone born as? Born with? Born into? The poems of Robert Pinsky’s At the Foundling Hospital engage personality and culture as improvised from loss: a creative effort so pervasive it can be invisible.

Robert Pinsky (ur. 1940), poeta, eseista, krytyk i tłumacz. Autor kilkunastu książek poetyckich, zadebiutował w 1975 r. tomem Sadness and Happiness. W latach 1997–2000 pełnił funkcję Poety Laureata Biblioteki Kongresu Stanów Zjednoczonych. Niezwykłym owocem tej działalności była akcja „Favorite Poem Project”, podczas której zachęcił tysiące Amerykanów do podzielenia się ulubionym wierszem. Z nagrań tych powstało kilka antologii poetyckich, zarówno drukowanych, jak i w wersji video. Tłumaczył m.in. Piekło Dantego oraz Osobny zeszyt Czesława Miłosza (razem z Renatą Gorczyńską i Robertem Hassem). Uczy creative writing na Uniwersytecie w Bostonie.Poezja jest dla Pinsky’ego istotnym elementem życia społecznego – to jego zdaniem demokratyczna siła spajającą duszę, emocje i ciało czytelnika w integralną całość. O jego zainteresowaniach świadczą tytuły książek eseistycznych: Democracy, Culture, and the Voice of Poetry (2002), Poetry and the World (1988) i The Situation of Poetry (1978). W twórczości poety trwały ślad odcisnęła pulsująca energia amerykańskich ulic i miast. Jednocześnie swobodnie porusza się on wśród starych mitów, odwołuje się do wielu kultur, wydarzeń historycznych, religii i filozofii. W młodości grał na saksofonie. Fascynacja jazzem sprawiła, że jego wiersze są niesłychanie muzyczne, a ich rytm i melodia zachęcają do głośnej lektury. Pinsky uważa poezję za sztukę oralną, a sam – obdarzony świetnym, głębokim głosem – czyta swoje utwory w niezrównanie charyzmatyczny sposób, chętnie z towarzyszeniem muzyków jazzowych.
