Ričardas Gavelis

    November 8, 1950 – August 18, 2002

Ričardas Gavelis was a prose writer, playwright, and essayist, recognized as the most stringent critic of totalitarianism in Lithuanian literature, often associated with his central metaphor of Vilnius as the 'anus of the Universe.' His work meticulously explored the deformations within the Lithuanian mentality and exposed the corrosive influence of ideologies on the individual. Gavelis employed an analytical, phantasmagorical, and metaphorical style to break taboos and reveal episodes of intimate life, forging a path for bold social critique. He demythologized national sacred cows, championed reason and freedom of the spirit, and integrated elements of mass culture and open eroticism into his writing.

A dark, enigmatic, and visceral examination of the psychology of repression, Vilnius Poker dives into the minds of four narrators whose contradictory memories challenge the very idea of truth. In this masterpiece written "for the drawer," Vilnius itself becomes a presence possessing a will, a consciousness and, worse, an intent. First published in 1989 when Lithuania was on the verge of breaking away from the Soviet Union, this book raised a firestorm for its brutality, frank sex, and its destruction of the myths of Lithuanian history.
