Onoda Hirō

March 19, 1922 – January 16, 2014

Hiroo Onoda served as a second lieutenant and intelligence officer in the Japanese army. He was notably one of the last Japanese soldiers to surrender following World War II, an act he committed in 1974. Disillusioned by the perceived loss of traditional Japanese values after his surrender, he moved to Brazil in 1976 to raise cattle. Returning to Japan in 1984, he established the Onoda Nature School, reflecting a continued dedication to certain principles.
