Román vyšel poprvé v roce 1932 a je inspirován dobou autorova dětství a raného jinošství v židovském městečku na dnešní Ukrajině, jež tehdy patřila k carské říši. Chlapec Penek pochází z jidiš hovořící rodiny velkoobchodníka s obilím a dřívím. Je v ní nejmladším, avšak nemilovaným dítětem. Postupně se vzdaluje náboženskému i společenskému životu svých příbuzných a stále častěji utíká z velkého bohatého domu na předměstí štetlu, kde vládne nepředstavitelná bída. Jeho sympatie patří stále více světu chudiny a drobných řemeslníků, jejichž synové, ačkoli je pro ně původně „zatracený panský synek“, ho na konci příběhu přijmou za svého.
