Charles Ludlum

Charles Ludlam was an American actor, director, and playwright who founded the Ridiculous Theatrical Company. His plays, though pastiches of gothic novels, Shakespeare, and popular culture, carried a more serious subtext. Ludlam viewed his work as part of the classical tradition of comedy, aiming to advance it. He frequently starred in his own productions, noted for his female roles, and penned one of the first plays to address HIV/AIDS. His most famous work, The Mystery of Irma Vep, is a send-up of gothic horror featuring two actors playing seven roles. Ludlam emphasized working within established conventions to foster originality and push comedic traditions forward.
