Ciszek Walter J.

Father Walter Ciszek was a Polish-American Jesuit priest who conducted clandestine missionary work in the Soviet Union. Fifteen of his twenty-five years there were spent in confinement and hard labor in the Gulag, preceded by five years in Moscow's infamous Lubyanka prison. Upon his release and return to the United States, he penned two books detailing his experiences and spiritual life amidst extreme hardship. His life has been under consideration by the Vatican for possible beatification or canonization, and he is currently titled Servant of God.
