John Pentland Mahaffy

    This versatile Irish scholar was a distinguished figure in classical studies and papyrology. Holding a chair in Ancient History at Trinity College, Dublin, he eventually became its Provost. His prolific writings spanned a wide range of subjects, with particular focus on the 'Silver Age' of Greece, where his works became standard authorities. Beyond his academic pursuits, he demonstrated a talent for music, composing tunes for chapel services.
