E' la storia di un giovane che cerca di uscire dalla situazione falsa che mette in scacco il suo matrimonio. Al momento di abbandonare la moglie, egli le scrive le ragioni del suo distacco, chiamandola a testimone della lotta vana che ha condotto contro la propria inclinazione omosessuale. Reagendo a una prova precedente che indulgeva alla moda delle biografie romanzate ( Pindare ), la Yourcenar, ventiquattrenne come Alexis, si concentra qui per la prima volta su una vicenda delimitata, "intimista", spingendosi in profondità nella psicologia del personaggio. L'omosessualità e il titolo stesso del romanzo richiamano un'opera giovanile di Gide (il Traité du vain désir ) ma si avverte molto più forte l'influenza del Rilke di Malte Laurids Brigge , a cui sono vicini il tono, gli scrupoli, la religiosità di Alexis, quella tenerezza diffusa che egli emana sulle persone e le cose. Un libro raro, e di quelli della Yourcenar uno dei pochissimi ch'ella non abbia provato a riscrivere, paga di aver detto quanto c'era da dire.
