Gustave Dore¿ Books
Gustave Doré emerged as the most popular and successful French book illustrator of the mid-19th century. His prolific output, employing dozens of blockcutters, gave European currency to the illustrated book of large format. Doré's work is characterized by a spirited, though somewhat naive, embrace of the grotesque, commercializing the Romantic taste for the bizarre. Beyond his famous literary illustrations, his more sober studies of London's poorer quarters captured the attention of influential artists, and he later expanded into ambitious painting and sculpture.
