Mary Douglas Nicol Leakey was a British archaeologist and anthropologist renowned for her groundbreaking discoveries in paleoanthropology. Her work at Olduvai Gorge, often in collaboration with her husband, unearthed crucial fossils of ancient hominines and developed a systematic classification for early stone tools. She is credited with discovering the first Proconsul skull and the robust Zinjanthropus skull, significantly advancing our understanding of human ancestry. Leakey also identified the Laetoli footprints, providing direct evidence of early bipedalism, and later led excavations independently, continuing a remarkable scientific legacy.
