A Swedish scientist and mystic who experienced a profound spiritual awakening in middle age. Subsequently, he claimed the ability to freely visit heaven and hell and converse with angels and demons. For the remainder of his life, he dedicated himself to writing theological works that aimed to reform Christian doctrines such as the Trinity and salvation. His writings have influenced numerous artists and thinkers, although some contemporaries rejected his ideas.
