Honoré de Balzac (1799–1850), jeden z nejznámějších francouzských spisovatelů, se proslavil zejména obřím literárním dílem Lidská komedie (1842), v němž se snažil postihnout všechny aspekty života Francie v ponapoleonské době. V deseti povídkách z let 1830–1835 využívá autor témata typická pro tehdy oblíbenou literaturu: nesmrtelnost, smlouva s ďáblem, elixír mládí. Je ironický, vyzývavý, místy rouhačský, filozofující nad unikajícím smyslem života, krutý ve výsměchu poměrů panujících ve „slušné“ společnosti, děsivý ve schopnosti nahlédnout do temných stránek lidské duše, někdy jen jednoduše vtipný. Práce porovnává stylizaci dialogu francouzského originálu Maupassantovy povídky L’ Ivrogne (Opilec) z roku 1884 s pěti českými překlady vydanými v období od r. 1902 do r. 1997. Předmětem srovnávací analýzy jsou prostředky mluveného jazyka včetně dialektu, které se výrazně uplatňují v dialozích této povídky a jsou podstatné pro interpretaci Maupassantova textu. Analýze excerpovaného materiálu předchází popis a usouvztažnění mluvenostních variet češtiny a francouzštiny. To je důležitým předpokladem posouzení adekvátnosti překladu mluvenostních prostředků použitých v jednotlivých českých verzích povídky. Práce zohledňuje také vývoj estetických překladatelských norem v českém prostředí a jejich vztah k normě domácí beletrie, přičemž přináší nástin výrazných tendencí českého uměleckého překladu uplatňovaných při převodu prostředků mluvenosti ve sledovaném období. Analýza českých verzí povídky L’ Ivrogne opírající se o dobové jazykové příručky i diachronně zaměřené studie zaznamenává proměny pohledu na mluvenost v kontextu českého literárního překladu. Přináší také zjištění, že stylové charakteristiky textu tohoto klasika francouzské literatury reflektují především překlady z druhé poloviny 20. století.
