Turners Studie zeichnet sich dadurch aus, dass sie sich nicht auf die Erforschung „primitiver“ Rituale beschränkt, sondern auch ein Instrumentarium für die Analyse der Rituale „komplexer“ Industriegesellschaften bereitstellt. Victor Turner hat in diesem erstmals 1982 erschienenen Buch Maßstäbe für die Anwendung ethnologischer, an »fremden Kulturen« gewonnener Erkenntnisse gesetzt.
