Alexander Newton Winchell was a geologist whose primary contribution was as an educator and a popular lecturer and author. He was significantly concerned with reconciling science and religion, and his views on evolution were controversial in his time, though today they draw comment for their inherent racism. While his geological research was not as impactful as his teaching, his work in popularizing the field left a notable mark.

This book offers a systematic exposition of the theory of evolution as it was understood in the late 19th century. The author, Alexander Winchell, was a geologist and biologist who sought to reconcile the concept of evolution with his Christian faith. He examines the scientific evidence for evolution, the philosophical implications of the theory, and its theological implications for the concept of God. The book was controversial in its time, but it remains a classic work of American natural theology.
First published in 1870, this book is a unique blend of science and religion. In it, Winchell presents a geological history of the earth, from its creation to the present day, while also exploring the role of God in the natural world. With its beautiful writing and thoughtful exploration of some of life's biggest questions, this book is a must-read for anyone interested in the relationship between science and faith.
