Edward Charles Pickering was an American astronomer and physicist who made significant contributions to astrophysics. He discovered the first spectroscopic binary stars and developed a method for simultaneously photographing the spectra of multiple stars. Under his leadership at Harvard College Observatory, great strides were made in gathering stellar spectra through photography. Pickering also employed and mentored numerous women who made crucial discoveries, such as Henrietta Swan Leavitt, whose work became foundational to the modern understanding of cosmological distances. His efforts established the Harvard College Observatory as a globally respected institution, a legacy that endures today.
