John Wycliffe

John Wycliffe was an English scholastic philosopher, theologian, and reformer who taught at Oxford University. He emerged as an influential dissident within the Roman Catholic Church in the 14th century. His followers, the Lollards, preached anticlerical and biblically-centered reforms, positioning the movement as a precursor to the Protestant Reformation. Characterized as the morning star of that reformation, Wycliffe was an early opponent of papal authority over secular power. He was also a dedicated advocate for translating the Bible into the vernacular, completing his translation by 1382 and making Scripture accessible to a wider audience.
