This Polish-American writer and politician was a descendant of the Polish King John III Sobieski. Following his father's execution for revolutionary activities in Poland, he was sent into exile in the US in 1846. He fought in the American Civil War for the Union and later joined Mexican revolutionary struggles. After the war, he turned to politics, becoming a founder of the Minnesota Prohibition Party. He was also a leader in the International Organisation of Good Templars.
