William Pulteney Alison

William Pulteney Alison was a Scottish physician and social reformer who advocated for the extension of poor relief in Scotland. Contrary to the prevailing belief that poverty stemmed from idleness, Alison argued that social factors and overcrowding were primary drivers of disease. He pioneered "political" medicine and social epidemiology by asserting that combating illness required addressing social inequalities and improving living conditions for workers.
