Henry Grattan

Henry Grattan was an Irish politician who campaigned for legislative freedom in the Irish Parliament. He was described as a superb orator – nervous, high-flown, romantic. With generous enthusiasm, he demanded that Ireland be granted its rightful status as an independent nation, while always insisting that Ireland would remain linked to Great Britain by a common crown and shared political tradition. Grattan opposed the Act of Union in 1800 that merged the Kingdoms of Ireland and Great Britain, though he later served as a member of the united Parliament in London.
