Bal Gangadhar Tilak
Bal Gangadhar Tilak was a prominent Indian nationalist and teacher who emerged as a pivotal figure in India's struggle for independence. He was the first popular leader of the Indian Independence Movement and a fervent advocate for self-rule, with his famous declaration, "Swaraj is my birthright, and I shall have it!" continuing to resonate today. Tilak deeply believed that religion and practical life were inseparable, and that true purpose lay in serving humanity and one's country. He was a strong critic of the Western education system, feeling it demeaned Indian students and disrespected India's heritage. To counter this, he co-founded the Deccan Education Society, aiming to establish a new educational framework that instilled nationalist ideals through an emphasis on Indian culture.
