Benn Pitman

This author, born in England, became a prominent figure in the United States as a popularizer of Pitman shorthand. During the early years of the Civil War, he served in the Union Army. From 1863 to 1867, he acted as the official stenographer for high-profile government prosecutions, including the trials of President Abraham Lincoln's assassin, the "Sons of Liberty," and the "Ku-Klux Klan." He also edited and compiled the printed reports of these significant legal proceedings.
