Bamboo, one of the fastest-growing plants on earth, is best known to many people as the food of giant pandas – more significant, however, is its long tradition as a construction material, especially in Asia and South America. Recently, it has also become increasingly popular among Western architects, designers, and engineers. Apart from a fantastic carbon footprint, the material’s amazing technical performance is responsible for this popularity. Because it is extremely light yet very hard at the same time it can compete with timber, concrete and steel. This volume presents contemporary projects that show the impressive versatility of its usage. Toys, fulfilling as they do one of mankind’s most basic needs, have existed for as long as we have. From the earliest times both adults and children have used toys to simulate reality or simply to pass time. Renowned designers, artists and architects have always tried their hand at creating from Frank Lloyd Wright’s work with Fröbel’s building blocks to Josef Hartwig’s Bauhaus chess set that is still produced today. Gerrit Rietveld, Pablo Picasso, Marcel Breuer and Andy Warhol also designed toys. However, most often it was craftsmen and women – such as the seamstress Margarete Steiff (Steiff teddy bears), the carpenters Christiansen (Lego), or the cabinet-maker Hans Beck (Playmobil) – who designed the most successful and enduring toys. Toys for small children are often distinguished by a high level of abstraction (babies’ toys, for example, typically have fluid contours, simplified detail drawings and primary colors), although timeless designer toys such as those produced by Naef cross all age limits and can even be found on executive desks. This volume presents numerous projects from around the world to demonstrate the limitless possibilities of engaging creatively with pallets in architecture and design.If not used for shipping they are anything but boring. "Pallets" are a universal symbol of the globalized world. The properties of this transport platform - standardization, stability, simplicity and internationality - are carried over into the work of architects and designers who use pallets as the material for their own creations. This book shows the variety of possibilities that can emerge from the creative interaction with an inconspicuous everyday article. The aspects of their simple design can be expressed by stacking pallets or contradicted in fragile structures. All around the world furniture items and interior design systems are created along with entire buildings based on the predetermined proportions of pallets. Sometimes the mass product is also demolished and only used in parts: for example, when bisected pallets serve as sideboards or individual boards are recycled as façade cladding.
