A prominent figure in politics and law, this individual was a key member of the nascent Republican Party. Before assuming the role of Chief Justice, they dedicated their efforts to dismantling what they perceived as the "Slave Power" – a conspiracy by Southern slaveholders to seize federal control and impede liberty's progress. Their articulation of this thesis predated others, and their influential slogan for the Free Soil Party, "Free Soil, Free Labor, Free Men," became a rallying cry.
