Oliver Otis Howard

General Oliver Otis Howard was a career United States Army officer and a Union general in the American Civil War. Known as the "Christian general" for his deep religious piety that informed his policy decisions, he took charge of the Freedmen's Bureau. In this role, he sought to integrate former slaves into Southern society and politics, attempting to protect them from hostile conditions despite repeated frustration due to his lack of authority. Howard was also a pivotal figure in promoting higher education for freedmen, most notably founding Howard University.
