Director, scenic designer, producer, author, educator and pioneer, Norris Houghton has done virtually everything a non-actor can do in the theatre except write a play. His has been a long and wonderfully eventful life, lived among the gifted, the wise, the wealthy, and the powerful; Houghton writes of it with modesty and humor, with a keen eye for the illuminating detail, and with equal relish for the great occasions he created for himself and those into which he was thrust by uncanny circumstance. Above all, he looks back on his eight decades of achievement and failure with total and disarming honesty. The result for the reader is a fascinating journey through most of this century with a gentle but determined man who, in a very real way, has helped to change his world.
