Westminster Assembly

This synod of theologians and Members of Parliament was convened to restructure the Church of England, driven by Puritan influences and opposition to the established religious policies. As part of a military alliance with Scotland, they aimed to align the English Church more closely with the Presbyterian Scottish Church. Over a decade, the assembly produced a new form of church government, a confession of faith, two catechisms, and a liturgical manual. Despite internal disagreements between Presbyterian and Congregationalist factions regarding church governance, their produced documents gained significant influence. Although initially repudiated after the Restoration, these documents became globally influential through missionary efforts and their adoption by various dissenting and Scottish churches, grounded in Reformed theology and covenantal interpretations of scripture.
